A Wise Woman Builds Her Home: How I Make a Full Time Income as a Stay-at-Home Mom

A Wise Woman Builds Her Home: How I Make a Full Time Income as a Stay-at-Home Mom

I do love the story in this post. It is exactly what the minamalists/ simple living people are saying!

I would love to bring in enough money my Hubby could take a different job; one where he didn't have to work 50 hours a week :-( Seriuosly, with commute time he leaves home at 5:30am and gets home at 6:00pm. This is why I am SO protective of our Saturdays and don't let anything interfer with them; its the only time he has with his kids as they are growing up---FAST!

Sigh. Blogging would be great, but I'm certainly not making a profit here. I made $.02 last month through google ads! Nothing through the Amazon affiliate program (mostly 'cause I don't actually post many links to products:-)

The only thing I actually make money at is the Lilla Rose hair accessories, and then only enough to support my "habit." (it's really weird for this simi-tom-boy, none frilly fru-fru to be jonesing for pretty hair clips! lol)

So, I help financially by doing everything in my power to keep the money he earns in the house (i.e. coupons, sales, cooking from scratch which is healthier anyway), but I would love to help even more.

Personality or character?

As a parent we can't change our child's personality. Those are the traits our child is born with that make them uniquely them;

extrovert or introvert?
energetic or calm?

You can often tell these traits in a small baby.

Character is what you are on the inside. It is the result of training by parents and teachers plus experiences and, mostly, choices.

A child's character is a reflection of training. It's not until adulthood that personal choices make a difference.

obedient or disobedient?
respectful or disrespectful?
honest or a liar?

These are learned traits.

If your child is disobedient, you need to do something about it. Not only are they disobeying you; they are disobeying God since He told them to obey you.

It is your responsibility as a parent to teach your child good character.

and just enjoy the personality:-)

Of iPhones and Dreams

Trying to get all my business done and get the shopping/coupons/rebates caught up. Quite a job. It will be better once I get the hang of my iphone.

iphone?

Yeah. My brother, a yuppie, bought himself and his wife new phones and then changed carriers. The new company couldn't use the phones he just bought, so he had to buy all new ones. Instead of selling these barely used ones, he gave them to my mom and I. Makes a great tablet! We'll go down today and see what it would cost to actually have a smart phone, but I wouldn't be surprised if the money is just too much it stays a very small tablet.

No matter. It works fine off the house's wifi, and it will work with all the rebate/electronic coupons sites, so it serves my purpose.

And I really, really like my stupid phone anyway :-)

How do you give up a life long dream? I should ask my brother, actually. He always loved baseball. Wanted to play professionally, in fact. But he had a serious foot injury in high school that still hurts him today, 30 years later, and that ended any hope of a sports career at all. Today, he is a high school special ed teacher, music leader at his (mega) church, and dad to seven kids, 12-25 (3 adopted, 4 steps kids). He's happy.

I have always wanted a farm, always been a country girl at heart. Hubby doesn't really care what I do while he's at work, and he likes living in the quiet country, but we just don't have the money to farm. Yes, it takes money, especially for those of us in the west. You see, 1.35 acres of rocks, sagebrush, and clay simply won't produce food for animals. Fact, I can't produce even something so simple as tomatoes! They just can't handle our random frosts or dehydrating winds in August (Seriously. You stand there watering the plant and gust of wind comes along, and you watch the plant wilt before your eyes, while still watering it!)

Hubby, on the other hand, is now looking at condos in the nearest city for the day when we can't drive anymore:-( Yeah, I know that's a ways off (we're both still in our 40's), and a lot can happen between now and then, but truthfully, his heart isn't and never has been in farming. I need to realign my thoughts to become a better help meet for him, to take on his dreams instead of my own. This is my job from God, to help Hubby achieve the goals God has given him. And if that means living in the city (where, honestly, we would have more chance to minister to others than we do out here in the boonies) than so be it.

But it's hard.

Happy Mother's Day quotes

G. K. Chesterton- “How can it be a large career to tell other people's children about the Rule of Three [referring to a kind of mathematical problem], and a small career to tell one’s own children about the universe? How can it be broad to be the same thing to everyone, and narrow to be everything to someone? No; a woman’s function is laborious, but because it is gigantic, not because it is minute. I will pity Mrs. Jones for the hugeness of her task; I will never pity her for its smallness.”

"Motherhood is not about the mother; mothers are in full-time ministry serving the Lord.”-Mark Driscoll

"The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother."
-- Theodore Hesburgh

"An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest."
-- Spanish proverb

"Children are the sum of what mothers contribute to their lives."
-- Unknown

Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs... since the payment is pure love. ~Mildred B. Vermont

Women's Liberation is just a lot of foolishness. It's the men who are discriminated against. They can't bear children. And no one's likely to do anything about that. ~Golda Meir

Sing out loud in the car even, or especially, if it embarrasses your children. ~Marilyn Penland

There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it. ~Chinese Proverb

"Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children."
--William Makepeace Thackeray (Most people treat God as they did their moms when they were children.)

"Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother."
-- Lin Yutang

"The commonest fallacy among women is that simply having children makes one a mother—which is as absurd as believing that having a piano makes one a musician."
-- Sydney J. Harris

On What We Have Lost:
"How the Americans (of the mid 1800s) View the Equality of Men and Women"

Following are some further quotes about the respective roles and equality of men and women in America’s democracy of the 1830s.

"There are Europeans who confuse the various characteristics of the sexes and would make men and women beings not only equal but alike. To both, they attribute the same functions equally, impose on them the same duties and grant them the same rights. They would involve them both in everything – work, pleasure, business. It is easy to see that, in this ambition to make the one sex equal to the other, both are demeaned and that, from the crude mixing of nature’s works, will emerge weak men and immodest women."

"That is far from being the American view of the type of democratic equality which can be brought about between men and women." ...

"America is the one country where the most consistent care has been taken to trace clearly distinct spheres for the two sexes and where both are required to walk at an equal pace but along paths that are never the same. You do not see American women directing concerns outside the range of the family, or handling business dealings, or entering politics. Neither do you see any women forced to face the rough work of plowing fields, nor any of those heavy tasks which demand the exertion of physical strength. No family is so poor that it forms the exception to this rule." …

"If the American woman is not allowed to escape the tranquil sphere of her domestic duties, neither is she forced to leave it."…

"Consequently, American women who display a quite manly intelligence and energy generally maintain very delicate features and always remain feminine in their ways even though they sometimes show they have the hearts and minds of men."…

"Nor have Americans ever imagined that the result of democratic principle would be to overturn a husband’s authority or to introduce any ambiguity about who is in charge in the family." …

"Americans constantly display their complete confidence in the understanding of their wives and have a deep respect for their freedom. They esteem that her mind is as capable as a man’s of discovering the plain truth and that her heart is just as resolute in following it." …

"In America a girl can set out on a long journey alone and without fear."

"American legislators, who have softened almost all the articles of the penal code, still punish rape by death. And no other crime is prosecuted with the same relentless severity by public opinion. The explanation is this: since Americans have nothing they value or respect more than a woman’s honor and independence, they consider no punishment too harsh for those who deprive her of both against her will." …

"Thus Americans do not believe that men and women have the duty or the right to perform the same things but they show the same regard for the role played by both and they consider them as equal in worth although their lot in life is different. They do not give to a woman’s courage the same character or role as a man’s but they never question its strength; and, while they do not think that a man and his partner should always use their intelligence and understanding in the same way, at least they consider that the one has as sound an understanding and as clear a mind as the other."

"For my part, I say this without hesitation: although the American woman rarely leaves her domestic sphere and in certain respects is very dependent within it, nowhere does she enjoy a higher status. And now, as I come near to the end of this book in which I have recorded so many considerable achievements of the Americans, if I am asked how we should account for the unusual prosperity and growing strength of this nation, I would reply that they must be attributed to the superiority of their women."

Examples for God's Design for Family

Sloan, Lahl: Inconvenient truths about commercial surrogacy
Surrogate motherhood is the creation of a slave class for the purpose of breeding humans like cattle. It isn't noble or good, but a violation of God's design for families.

LAF/Beautiful Womanhood Is Stay-At-Home Daughterhood Biblical?

A biblical case for stay-at-home daughterhood.  Fascinating.

My oldest is a Stay-at-Home daughter. She is definitly my right-hand-woman. Things get done now that haven't gotton done for years because of her help.

And during all the health problems of the last year (my mom's breast cancer, dad's pnemonia, sons ruptured appendex, and another son's broken needle in the hand requiering surgury to remove) I had no worries about the house or other children. I knew she was here to care for them all and would do at least as good of a job as I would.

Some day God will send her her man and they will make their own family. But for now, I am glad to have her around helping me. He physical presence and help is worth more than any amount of cash. Her value to me is above Rubies.

The saint of the NICU | Conversion Diary
I've been following Jennifer's blog for several years. This is the touching story of God's provision for her son in ICU last year.

I do think what she is trying to say in giving God credit for the ministry of a man who doesn't believe in God is "I believe God sent you to us as a tremendous blessing. Thank you."

Mom, Will You Homeschool Me? - Jenni and Jody

This woman did the wisest thing I have ever heard a mom do. She PRAYED about it, honestly listening to God's reply and trusting Him to provide, no matter what the answer.

Have YOU prayed about how God wants YOUR children educated? Or have you just concluded that it's not possible and dismissed all options but public school?

God designed the family and intended it's members to help each other in hard times. He did not intend for the kids to go one way, mom another, and dad still another. The ideal family works together for their common goals, physically being together.

Whether this means a daughter helping mom out into her 20's, a grandpa sacrificing sleep to care for a sick grandkid, or a family choosing to be content with the kids God does or doesn't send, God's ways are best.

Feminism, Excellence, and tolerence

LAF/Beautiful Womanhood Authentic Feminine Excellence:
Why do we view other human persons, especially our own children, as stumbling blocks to our own development, fulfillment, and flourishing? How can we expect to explore a truly creative and feminine excellence if we insist that women must pursue and attain excellence in a fashion identical to that of men?

Domestic Felicity: Once upon a time - a brief history of feminism as I see it
We ought to question the purported value of contraception and abortion, and we should speak more freely about the damage they
have caused to women’s health, happiness, and flourishing. We need to
challenge the assumption that children are a hindrance to personal
development or career advancement. The sacrifices that both women and
men must make to raise children are very real, but so are the sacrifices
one makes to advance a career or pursue a talent. Why have we idolized
careers and talents at the expense of children and human relationships?

Calendars, Tasks, and Allowances

Google calendar lets you have several different task lists. I know from experience that
having my "to do's" sorted and assigned to certain days of the week helps me to not feel overwhelmed. So this morning (after my prayer time and editing commentary on Ezekiel 29), I made/renamed my task lists according to the days of the week.
  • All work for my church gets done on Monday. First Fruits of my time and all that.
  • All business and blogging kind of stuff gets done on Tuesday.
  • Correcting my children's writing from school, working on their blogs and Etsy shop, and so on gets done on Wednesday.
  • Menus, coupons, sale hunting, and shopping lists get done on Thursdays.
  • Writing (books, pamphlets, articles, etc) as well has running MalwareBytes and Ccleaner on all the computers gets done on Fridays.
  • Cooking for church (bread and desert), as well as any extra cooking and handcrafts get done on Saturday
  • The only "work" I allow myself on Sunday's is crocheting (which is more fun that work) and laundry.
In addition, I have a "house to do" list which includes making yogurt (we save close to $30 a week by making it instead of buying individual servings), kefir, buttermilk, soaps, big cleaning chores, and gardening chores.

I am hoping this will help me get over the feeling of being overwhelmed I have had so much lately.

I actually started yesterday with writing. I was able to get six pages up to our church's website. I have known for some time we needed something explaining our views of of Israel and prophecy (we believe differently than most Evangelicals), but have felt too overwhelmed to write them. It dawned on me while talking to my mom I already had something written I could use. I expected one page, but it just kept growing! Feels good to have that job done?:-)

We have changed how we do the kids allowances. Before we gave them all their allowances on the second Friday of the month, but this added more than $100 to our budget for that week! I have made two big changes in the last month:
  • We are now doing two kids a week. I even added it to my chore calendar. This makes it about $30 a week which is much more hand-able.
  • We have opened Akimbo accounts. This is a pre-loaded credit card designed just for allowance-type stuff. The parent opens a main account and can add up to five sub-accounts. Each account gets it's own visa card. I move allowance money to my card each week and than to the appropriate child's card. (My Jim (19) has his own bank account and PayPal so he didn't need an Akimbo card. My Joy will open her own Akimbo account I can just send her allowance to. She has no interest in a brick-and-mortar account of her own). We are just getting this set up, but I think it will work well. I seldom have cash on hand so it has been where the kids try to spend all their money as soon as they get it so I don't forget. With their own cards they can save if they want, buy at Amazon, Wall-mart, even our thrift stores without worrying if I have the money or not. And, most importantly, they have to keep track of their money and make appropriate decisions on budgeting. This should build much better habits.

I am looking for an app where I can put in store websites and get a comparison of prices for the week for each item on my shopping list. Any ideas?

HSLDA | The Romeike Case

HSLDA | The Romeike Case

However controls education controls the country.

The German government uses a Hitler era law to forbid parents from homeschooling, supposedly in order to prevent another Hitler.

They insist there can be no "alternate cultures" come up and so all children must be educated in the same schools in the same way in order to assure tolerance.

Yea. Real tolerant there; let's put all parents who disagree with us in jail in order to teach tolerance.

I'm very glad the Romeikes can stay, but the Supreme Courts refusal to hear the case, letting BO's policy that governments have the right to control education stand scares me.

Where do Americans go when our government cracks down on those who are different in the name of tolerance?

I was once asked in a survey from the county what they could do to get me to enroll my kids in public school. My answer:

"Teach the Christian God in every subject from Bible-believing point of view."

Nothing less would ever even tempt me.

Why Moms Are Protesting Common Core - Eagle Forum

Why Moms Are Protesting Common Core - Eagle Forum

In what is supposed to be the richest, free-est country the world has ever seen there is NO excuse for any unpopular policy to be implemented. If parents thought their child's education more important than their high standard of living they would think it worth while to pull their kids and make sure they received a God-centered, righteous education.

As I've said before, whoever writes the check makes the decisions.

Happiness and the Baby Bust

Happiness and the Baby Bust

"The truth is that years ago, before this generation of mothers was even born, our society decided where children rank in the list of important things. When abortion was legalized, we wrote it into law. Children rank way below college. Below world travel for sure. Below the ability to go out at night at your leisure. Below honing your body at the gym. Below any job you may have or hope to get. In fact, children rate below your desire to sit around and pick your toes, if that is what you want to do. Below everything. Children are the last thing you should ever spend your time doing."..

."Thus, while parenting, in itself, is a single calling (of many other
worthy callings) for Christians, it's worth considering whether the
messages we send as Christians evidence that we believe it is such. For
millennials, who are grasping for life-meaning in a decade where they
will be interpreting what holds value, parenting is a valid choice that
displays the beauty of the gospel."

Raising children is bringing up the next generations of warriors who worship at the feet of the King. What more important job could there possibly be?

America hates children

That we allow the whole-sale butcher of our preborn is proof enough, but the fact is our childless rate is skyrocketing.

One big culprete is women buying into the idea that they have all the time in the world. After all, science defeated biology with the Pill, right?

They pursue their career first and then find themselves in their late 30's alone (all the good men were taken a decade ago) and infertile.

God designed us to have babies and this is one case of "use it or lose it." The best thing you can do to insure you can have babies in your 30's is to have a few in your 20's!

Who will take care of all these women when they are elderly? Who will take them shopping, to the doctor, check on them, visit with them, make the medical descisions?

The only answer is Uncle Sam.

If that doesn't scare you, I don't know what would.

Thank God I wasn’t college material | The Matt Walsh Blog
Yeeeeeep. (though techniquely, with a 3.85 GPA I was college material. I just didn't want to go). I am more and more convinced that our kids would be better off taking the money they and their parents would normally spend on college and just buying a house. Same payments (or less!) but you have a place to live. And if the child wants to move that house will bring more blessings to the bank account than a degree would. Why not start building physical capital instead of paper capital? And if you already own your home, you don't need as high of an income to be comfortable. This leaves the door open for a wider array of career options.
