Picture the life you want, then remove everything that isn't in the picture.
When Stillness Calls Loudest—How to Minimize Noise

Christmas is the time to honor Jesus for coming to us to bring salvation.

How does your season honor Him?

Or is it too full of stuff-and-junk to see the manger?

Exercise Is ADHD Medication
So, essentially, ADHD is "making little boys sit still and be quiet like little girls." Yes, I know girls have it too. I have a lot of symptoms of it myself. But its not like any of us in America get enough movement in our lives. And boys are affected by ADHD in far higher numbers. We need to quit acting like there is no biological difference between boys and girls and treat them how they need to be treated.

SIX THINGS I LOVE ABOUT BEING A HIGHLY SENSITIVE HOMESCHOOLER
I have often suspected that God prefers homeschooling more for the parents benefit than the child's.

Science and Big Pharm

NEJM editor: “No longer possible to believe much of clinical research published” | The Ethical Nag

If you want the truth, follow the money- always.

Our meds are prescribed by doctors (who attended schools largely funded by Big Pharm), and approved by the FDA (which is staffed by doctors with the above education and who often hold stock in Big Pharm or otherwise have interest in their financial well being), and funded by research fees from Big Pharm.

This is crony-ism at its worst. This is NOT capitalism. A truly capitalist system would force Big Pharm to publish their works and allow us to decide if we want a med or not. The gov's only role should be the enforcement of justice (i.e. life for life).

Study Confirms Link Between Autism and Use of Cells From Abortions in Vaccines
Guess I might be wrong. It's not the mercury causing the autism (though I still think it unwise to give a baby the RDA "safe" amount of mercury for a 400 pound man!)

I think I would prefer the mercury:P

Help, doc, I’m bored by boring things. I think I’ve got the ADHD! | The Matt Walsh Blog

So, do mental disorders exist? Sure. Absolutely. Of course. But if half of us have one, then I guess you can’t really call them disorders, can you? If the CDC and Big Pharma are to be believed — “mental disorders” are very much a part of the normal order of things.

The only thing worse than trying to control WHAT people think, is trying to control HOW they think. In this country, we do both. And then we have the nerve to claim we value “diversity” and “freedom.” We do everything in our power to eradicate diversity of thought and freedom of thought, even resorting to fabricating mental disorders to give us an excuse to commit a psychological genocide of entire personality types.

There’s no question that some people — myself included — think and behave in a certain way; a way that currently falls under the “ADHD” umbrella. The question is this: are these people “disordered”? Do they need medicine? Is there something WRONG with how they are?

Or should we help them explore and harness their different, complicated, wonderful minds? In the end, this is more of a philosophical question than a medical one. I know my answer. I encourage you to come up with your own.

NaturalNews exclusive: International Medical Council on Vaccination refutes vaccine propaganda with myth-busting report
Big Pharm's biggest money maker is vaccines. They have every incentive in the world to lie and talk the gov into using force to make people use their product.

Studies have shown that the MORE educated and the RICHER the parents the LESS likely they will vaccinate. This should tell us something.

Documents emerge proving Dr Andrew Wakefield innocent; BMJ and Brian Deer caught misrepresenting the facts
One of the original anti-vac doctors. This blogger lied about him. He took him to court for libel and won.

Gardasil researcher drops a bomb:
"This vaccine hasn't been tested on young girls and won't have any affect on cancer rates."

Also, more women will be permanently damaged from the vaccine than would contract cervical cancer!

Do research for yourself and look at all the evidence. Compare studies with history with God's Word with God's design.

We can't depend on Big Brother or any experts to take care of us, or even tell us the truth. We have to research for ourselves.

Do You Realize That It's a Dog?

Shoved to Them: Do You Realize That It's a Dog? I understand lonely people having pets for company. For goodness sake, I have a cat, dog, four rabbits, 13 chickens, a dairy cow and a calf. And this is down from my high of three cats, one dog, fifteen rabbits, 16 chickens and a cow. But I understand that they are animals, NOT people. If I am going somewhere my dog would not be welcome, he stays home (and hunts quail and jack rabbits in our yard. He never catches them, but he has a great time). He's not my baby, though I call my self mom to him. That's because with eight children (and one on the way) it's simpler to just have one name per person. I am too distractable to remember to answer to more than that. Speaking of which...

The relief of being diagnosed with ADHD My little brother was labled when he was a child. Mom refused to use meds but did cut his sugar and used behaior modification. He's a high school teacher, worship leader, guitar teacher, single dad to three adopted boy today (my sil passed away two years ago.) He's blessed to have so much energy!

They never even considered testing me. I was the quiet little girl in the back of the room whispering the answers to the kid in front of me.

But as an adult I read the discription of the female manifstation of ADHD and was floored! You mean everyone doesn't forget everything if they don't write it down? People actually remember to go back into the kitchen and turn the oven off BEFORE the cake starts smoking? Really???

I just figured everyone was the way I am, except of course hubby who never forgets anything ("What do you mean 'how could I pick up low fat milk instead of whole?' They are right next to each other on the shelf. I am sure everyone does it all the time. Oh. You never have? Sigh.") I thought HE was the weird one.

I began to keep an organizer (I call it my memory chip. I especially like Blooms.) I set timers (and most of the time remember what for!) Other little things to keep my head going the right direction.

Anyway, these posts are from a new blog I found today really hit a note with me.

Allergies, bugs, and mold

Today's post is quite delayed because I have been doing some research.

For many years I have been very thankful that my children are very strong and healthy with very few illnesses. Even Hubby and I haven't been very ill (except for Hubby's kneww he destroyed playing basketball as a young adult and a slight tendancy towards hypogycimia and asthma in me.)

Gradually over the years though, this has been changing.

Hubby had a kidney stone, then a couple of bouts of gout, now he is showing signs of asthma.

My weight has started to rise, hormones are obviously not right (but then I am approaching the age where "not right" is perfectly normal.), acne is coming back (!), achey, fatigued, IBS, migraines, ADHD getting worse.

Oldest daughter has bad acne. In fact all my older children do, though her's is the worst.

Hubby and a son have severe constipation issues.

A daughter is showing signs of blood sugar problems. I am watching closly.

A daughter has random hives and eczema (actually all four of my younger ones do, but one is much worse than the others.)

Hay fever all over the place.

Hubby has started having occasional cases of hive; 1 big hive from head to foot accompanied by, uhhh, tummy problems.

We are starting our third winter of one cold or flu right after another. Of course, some of this is just because with so many people in the house by the time a virus passes through everyone, the first person is simply exposed to something new. But it didn't used to be this way....

After prayer at church about Daughter 4's bad hive problem (she was taking allergy meds EVERYDAY and they were only reducing her pain, not stopping it), I noticed that her worst days were the ones when it had been her turn to wash dishes. We immediately switched to a hypo-allergenic dish soap. She has only taken allergy meds twice since then!

I have since switched to dye/fragrance free laundry soap and am in the process of  finding recepies for homemade cleaners for the rest of the house.

We are trying to wash everywhere hands touch, wash hands, and generally wash everything more often.

I am incorperating more immune supporting herbs and reducing processed foods.

Today, I ran across a site discussing several families' stories about house mold.

Those symptoms are WAY too close for comfort:-( I don't know what I could possibly do if it is mold. We simply can't afford to move and that is the only real option for complete treatment.

I can only depend on God to provide the answers I need.

California Poppy

I was recently given a bunch of California Poppy seeds. I am waiting for fall to plant them. I have always loved the beautiful bright orange flowers.

My Herbalist teacher recently mentioned on her facebook account that after undergoing a painful diagnostic test, she intended to use this herb to help get rid of the pain and let her sleep. I had never heard of it used medicinally, though I have heard of our local Prickly Poppy (big white flowers) being used like that (and of course everyone has heard of the Opium Poppy and its affects).

(Source for picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:California_poppy_(Eschscholzia_californica)_-_22.jpg)

Ca Poppies contain isoquinoline alkaloids, which are known to have pain-relieving properties.Other active constituents include opiate alkaloids (completely free of toxicity), chelerthyrine alkaloids, flavone glycosides and zinc.

A little research tells me that the California Poppy is good for:
  • a painkiller when applied directly to the afflicted area.
  • toothache
  • chronic bed wetting.
  • hypnotic for children to sedate them and help them sleep.
  • colic and gall bladder pain.
  • sedative for headaches
  • insomnia
  • antidepressant
  • acute nerve and muscular centered pain.
  • anxiety,
  • high fever,
  • rapid pulse
  • persistent spasmodic cough
  • nervousness,
  • restless,
  • agitation,
  • insomnia,
  • sedative,
  • intestinal colic,
  • rheumatism,
  • earaches
  • analgesic
  • tincture is used for antimicrobial properties applied externally to cuts and scrapes.
  • head lice
  • antispasmodic
  • to improve intellectual capacity, memory and concentration in the elderly.
  • leaves of the flower used externally in powder form for antimicrobial properties
  • ADD, ADHD in children and young adults
  • oxygenates the circulatory system
  • normalize psychological functions by influencing the neurotransmitters without depressing the central nervous system.
  • helps the body absorb vitamin A.
  • Contains the B complex vitamins
  • European communities use it for hyperactivity,
    • sleeplessness
    • coughs for children
    • included in preparations for insomnia for adults.
  • German Commission E lists California poppy as an antispasmodic and sedative.
  • relaxing, so it works well in cases of pain with anxiety.
  • tincture from the root as an external wash for suppressing lactation
  • A key alkaloid (chelerthyrine) inhibits a body protein (kinase C) that contributes to persistent pain.
  • used both internally and externally to alleviate inflammatory and arthritic pain.
Plant Parts Used: (the entire plant of the Californian poppy is harvested in maturity.)
  • Root,
  • leaves
  • seeds.
Bitter to the taste with subtle euphoric properties,
considered a sub-opiate

Toxicity: There have been no indications of toxicity for Eschscholzia californica in experimental studies or in anecdotal reports.

Contraindications and cautions:
  • fever,
  • pregnancy;
  • concurrently with prescription drugs and psychiatric medications.
When used in higher doses California Poppy acts as a sedative, inducing a pleasant drowsy feeling, not enough to promote marked sedation, but powerful enough that tasks such as driving or operating machinery are best avoided under its influence.

Herbalists have observed that crude herb extracts of the various poppy species are less addictive and less potent in their activities than the purified alkaloids (opium in the red poppy), with fewer side-effects. Unlike opiates or even the stronger acting Poppy species, Rudolf Weiss states that the effect of California Poppy is towards "establishing equilibrium," and is not at all narcotic (1988, 289).

 Use in:
  • lotion,
  • liniment,
  • tincture
  • plaster.
  • infusion
  • tinctures
  • dried powder of herbs
Moore recommending that it be combined with Valerian for a stronger effect (1993, 112).
Felter and Lloyd considered Eschscholzia to be an "…analgesic and soporific without the dangers attending opiates, quieting pain and producing (a) calm sleep" (1893).

Recipe For An ADD Child

· Take one normal boy (some girls will work, but boys are more reliable).
· Zap his brain with unnatural sound waves before birth.
· Feed him on nutrient-free stimulants (white sugar, caffeine, white flour), preferably from birth.
· Refuse to teach self-control and self-discipline, giving him everything he wants. It will work even better if you first tell him No and then let him argue you out of it.
· Make sure he only considers his feelings and never considers how others may feel.
· Lock him in a room with thirty other children and one teacher who (due to small family sizes) has never been around small boys.
· Tell the boy to sit still for six hours without making noise, preferably with brain-cell destroying TV in front of him.

The earlier you begin ADD training, the better the results. Enrollment in a daycare at birth will produce the most extreme results.

Recipe for a non ADD child

· Take one normal child of either sex.
· Give them the most natural, intervention free pregnancy and birth possible.
· Feed him breast milk exclusively for as long as possible then with all natural, chemical free, unprocessed foods.
· Teach him from a very young age to control himself, obey without question and listen to directions.
· Give him everything he needs, some things he wants and a few things he desires. Make sure he understands the difference.
· Teach him that others feel as he would if he were treated that way. Teach him to empathize.
· Let him run outside for a couple of hours everyday. The more and freer the physical activity the better.
· Limit all time looking at electronics.
· Teach him at home where the same amount can be accomplished in two hours that takes six in a traditional school.
· Tolerate a little noise most of the time.

Again, the earlier, the better.

ADD is a real conditon that afflicts some. However, I firmly believe that 90% of those diagnosed with ADD or ADHD (or what ever letters they are calling it this year) have been harmed by environmental factors and/or bad child rearing techniques. I don't think it is an accident that this illness was discovered at the same time the first generation raised on artficial breast milk (formulas), soda, TV and with no discipline hit the government schools.

fox in socks Phonics

I have a child who is having a bit of trouble reading. Part is my fault. I was a bit overwhelmed when she was at that ideal window to learn and just couldn't teach her. Part of it is ADHD. Whatever.

The last few days I have had her just pick a few baby books off the shelf and read them to me. Among today's selections was "Fox in Socks." (abbreviated version.) She did great! It's a hard book, sometimes, even for those of us who know how to read:-) It is the best, most entertaining and memorable way to introduce all the ways to spell each sound!

Mom has her last radiation today. Yeah! Glad that is all over with.

Mom and Dad are going to the AB of C conference this week. Next week they are trying a new group's conference.

Meanwhile, we are going camping next week. Dont' know where; just out of the smoke!!!

Need to find someone to care for the animals while we are both gone.

Looking forward to changing to the Robinson Method of homeschooling. Les work for me, more interesting for the kids, and just what I would tell someone in my position to do:-P

I need some livestock. I am much happier with very big pets in the backyard.

I have been reading "Overwhelmed" a book by several homeschooling moms who have faced hard times and what they did about it.  Very interesting. My story could easily fit right in with the rest.

Fast Food and Church

My mom likes to take us out to lunch frequently. Now, my children behave just fine in a nice restaurant, but with this many people, fast food is just faster, easier, and cheaper. So we go to fast food most of the time.

Our favorite is Wendy’s. They have the dollar menu, which makes it even cheaper, we like the food, and the people at our branch on the north side of town are very good at getting our order right.

But every once in a while, we decide to go to Carl’s Jr., Del Taco (only place in town with Cherry Coke:-), Round Table Pizza’s lunch buffet, Jack in the Box, Arbys, or Subway. We like the variety and every place has something different to offer. Do we feel guilty because we aren’t loyal to Wendy’s? No, of course not. That is what fast food is. We are the consumer and have the right to go where we want. Other than paying for our food and not destroying the premises, we don’t owe any one franchise anything.

There is something that has happened to American churches I don’t like, but just figured out last night (at 1:00 am- blaaahhh:-P). It has taken me several years to figure it out.

We American Christians treat our churches like they were fast food restaurants. We might go to one for a while, most of the time, but church B puts on better holiday programs, and the Internet has great councilors, and books are cheap so we buy several a month to tell us what we should think and believe. We may pay our tithes wherever we go the most often (or not), but we don’t feel we owe the church anything else. Pastors of churches and owners of fast food are the same thing; they are just supposed to be there when we want them and not take offence if we go to many different places for our spiritual food.

Is this biblical?

Short answer is “no,” but whenever have you heard me give a short answer?

Hebrews 13:17 “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”

I usually quote this verse in regard to government, but that is not really what it is talking about. It is talking about those who have the rule of your church; the pastor you choose to set under. We have a direct command from the Bible, here, to SUBMIT to our pastors because they “watch out for our souls.”

James 3:1 “My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.”

Don’t have many different “pastors” (spiritual leaders) because we pastors are responsible for YOUR souls and will be held to a higher standard than anyone else. We pastors are answerable to God for not only our own souls, but those of all who come through the doors of our church. So James tells us to have very few spiritual bosses because it is not fair to put a pastor under this condemnation and then not give him the chance to care for you. Besides, he can’t do his job if you aren’t THERE.

The biblical requirements for a pastor (1 Timothy 3) are that he is not a drunk or polygamist, not a fighter, he is able to teach, blameless, vigilant, sober (not silly), of good behavior, hospitable, not greedy, patient, not envious, and have well behaved children …(“For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?”). The Bible says quite plainly that ruling a church is just like ruling a family and a man must be good at the family before he is to be given rule over the church. This means that parishioners are equal to a man’s children! They are NOT just customers!

(By the way, you won’t find the requirement to even BE a preacher, much less a good one, on that list.)

Pastors are human. They do make mistakes sometimes. But I can guarantee that those mistakes are made with the best intentions in mind. Many people are more tolerant of a fast food restaurant giving them the wrong hamburger than of their pastor caring enough to be involved in their life.

“But isn’t it ‘Just You and Me Jesus?’ “

NO. There is nowhere in the Bible that tells us that. We are supposed to be part of a community of believers, a family, and that community is in ONE LOCAL ASSEMBLY.

Let me spell that out a little better:
q Children are to submit to and obey their parents.
q Wives are to submit to and obey their hubbies.
q The man is the head of the house and will be held directly responsible by God for the spiritual condition of his household.

BUT

The man is to find a pastor and sit under his authority and teaching in order to grow (this is part of “caring for his own”). Sometimes this does take some shopping around. That is not what I am talking about. I am also not saying you should have your ultimate loyalty to the pastor or the church. That belongs to God.

What I am saying is that just as a child needs parents in order to grow up right, Christians need pastors. A baby Christian who doesn’t place himself under the authority of a pastor is the same as a daycare baby (daycare.homeschoolwwh.com). He is in extreme danger of “growing up” unbonded to anyone. He becomes a church hopper (equivalent of Reactive Attachment Disorder.) He can’t learn all that his potential would otherwise let him (Learning Disorder). He can’t settle in enough to be of any good to the body of Christ as a whole (ADHD).

James 5:14 “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

This does not say “Go to the Internet and find a spiritual warrior to say a prayer for you.” Or “send some money to a TV preacher or missionary so he will put you on his prayer list.” It says to call the elders of THE CHURCH- the church you have submitted yourself to- and they are to pray and anoint with oil. This anointing is not some magic ceremony that is to be preformed. I have looked it up. This “oil” was Olive Oil, which is highly medicinal. The word “anoint” here is not the one used for sacred events but for ACTS OF APPLYING MEDICINE! James is telling the parishioners to call the leaders of their church so the leaders can not only pray for them but can physically minister to their needs. Internet and TV preachers CAN’T DO THIS! Only your local pastor CAN. But you have to CALL him. You have to tell the leadership of your church you have a problem.

Yes, I know. Many pastors today think they have the same role as the owner of a fast food restaurant; make sure the place is ready just in case any one cares to show up. But if you look, you WILL find a pastor that understands his role as your shepherd, your (I hate to use the term, but no other one fits) spiritual father. No, he doesn’t replace our Father God, but leads you closer to Him just as a child’s father is supposed to do.

(Fast Food is not nearly as accurate of a term as Prostitute is to describe the feeling we pastors have. We stand on the corner all gussied up with a repartee of activities to offer. We will give you what you want and smile and nod when you tell us you are going to see someone else this week, but what we really want is your love.)

The fact is that you DO owe your pastors more than just tithes. When a pastor (and by “pastor” I mean the senior pastor, teachers, musicians, etc.- the leadership of a church) “does” a service, it empties him. It is very exhausting. We get this tired no matter how few people there are in the congregation. How does a pastor get “filled up?” By the people being there to hear him. The more people, the more refreshed and “fed” a pastor will be after the service. I know this because I have watched my parents pastor for my whole life and now my hubby and I are assistant pastors and experiencing the same thing. I have seen the exhaustion and discouragement on their faces when no one is there. I have felt the depression that comes when yet another family simply quits for no apparent reason. I have felt the hurt when someone who is supposed to be coming to us for their spiritual food excitedly tells us about some new prayer quake in the neighborhood who is “helping” them. (“Oh, Wendy’s, Burger King offers French fries! Isn’t that cool! I am going there tomorrow to get some.” What? We offer French fries. Always have. You never told us you wanted any.)

When you go from church to church, when you don’t submit, you are stealing from the pastors. You are not giving to them but just going to enjoy the show. They “feed” you and you aren’t paying them back with your presence, emotional and spiritual support. You are using them.

You DO owe us more than your tithes. In fact, keep the money. We don’t even want your money. God will supply without you. He always has.

You owe us to BE IN CHURCH where your very presence feeds US. You owe us the chance to teach you about serving God, something we CAN’T DO if you are not HERE. We will have to stand before God Himself and give answer for YOUR SOUL. The least you could do is give us a chance to help you.

Why Would I Want to Be a Homemaker? Part 1

Ohio Mother is Modern Day Rosa Parks - Big Government

Differences between small and large families...

Government Isn't the Parent

Use your Authority, not your Power.
I have never disciplined a teenager. I have a 19yo, 16yo and one who will be 13 next month. I have never had to punish anyone with "teen" added to their age.

I believe you teach them well when they are little (up to about two) and you seldom have problems after that. That has certainly born out in my children.

Which Parenting Culture is Best?

Amen!

And here are what my dc are required to do before they can graduate from our homeschool:
  • Read the Bible through, cover to cover, at least once (and more often is strongly encouraged.)
  • Understand and have good character and manners.
  • Know as many good, scriptural hymns as I do.
  • Play the piano good enough to play in church.
  • Play a string instrument.
  • Play a wind instrument.
  • Be able to draw. (anyone can achieve a minimal level of skill in both drawing and music. Not everyone can be a Da Vinci or a Mozart, but everyone can learn the fundamentals.)
  • Be able to express themselves in writing and speech.
  • Understand basic health.
  • Of course some miscellaneous "regular" subjects too (see abeka.com and Mathusee.com)

It really does matter where mom is. Did you know that in some parts of Europe they value mothers and their work enough to give them a YEAR  of maternity leave? Now, I don't actually believe the government shoudl tell a business owner how best to treat his employees, but this demonstrates the value they place on children. We Americans don't really like kids at all and certainly don't think they are as important as money.

Go to Your Room!

From my e-friend Carla Hartley:

  • Don't let your "inner child" raise your children. Don't be the parent you wanted. Be the parent your children need, and that really means being the parent EACH child needs.
  • Your goal as a parent is to work yourself out of a job. Teach your children to make choices and to accept the reality that there are consequences for all choices.
  • Be sure that as you introduce the world to your child that you introduce your child to the world. My young children knew that they were part of every aspect of my life and that even my acquaintances knew them by name. The world knew they were mine and I was theirs. Kids want to belong.
  • Children should NOT get their way about everything. They need some rules and restrictions. Children do not want to be the most powerful person in their world. If you can't stand up TO them, how confident will they be that you can stand up FOR them. It is a big world out there to little kids and they need someone ELSE to be in charge.
  • Parent with intention and authenticity. Children won't hear what you say as clearly as they see what you do. You don't just live with your children; you live in front of them. Do that carefully.
Great advise Carla:-)

Should a Child's Room be a Castle?

“Do Large Families Burden the Older Children?” If we still lived in a time when we had no choice in the size of our family, no one would even ask this question. And it was this time that produced, well, all of history including all the great men and women that ever lived.

Holding your baby may save his life.
I even heard of a grandpa giving kangaroo care. He was an MD. Dad was unavailable and they had an emergancy c-section. Grandpa held his grandbaby on his bare chest until she stabalized.

"A ritual is a patterned, repetitive, and symbolic enactment of a cultural belief or value; its primary purpose is alignment of the belief system of the individual with that of society. A rite of passage is a series of rituals that move individuals from one social state or status to another as, for example, from girlhood to womanhood, boyhood to manhood, or from the womb to the world of culture. Rites of passage transform both society’s perception of individuals and individuals’s perceptions of themselves." Yep. That's American childbirth.

The Benefits of Boredom

Our society is so mixed up we think what is normal is childabuse and what is childabuse is normal! Really, sending your baby to be bullied on a daily basis is abuse. Loving your child enough to want to be with them is not.

Two under two Anna tells us how life is going with a new baby. THIS is how it's supposed to be. THIS is normal.

"Most conventional doctors are nutritionally illiterate. So are most parents. And if we wish to change the health future of America, this situation obviously needs to change. Nutrition should be the foundation of med school training, not an afterthought."

Want smart kids? Turn the TV off and take them outside to play.

$150?! For ONE pair of jeans?!?! For a child who will probably outgrow them in six months?!?!?! Goodness, I could buy enough jeans to get all ten of us through the next six months (when you count hand me downs) and throw in a couple of t-shirts for that!

Basics of Child Training
“Foundational to everything is the understanding of WHY it is so important to invest the time and energy it will take into raising pleasant, obedient children.” There is no point in doing the hard work of parenting if you don’t think it's important!

Parenting While Thinking Ahead http://makinghome.blogspot.com/2007/12/parenting-while-thinking-ahead.html

Great advise and something too few parents do. As I said in a previous post, I am not raising children; I am raising adults. I make every decision (or at least try to) with that goal in my mind.

Actually, I am raising a legacy of warriors to worship at the feet of my King.

This requires that I be diligent in changing bad habits, educating the brain, and feeding the soul.

This is what parenting is about.

When does childhood end and adulthood begin? Many of our adult-ecents are living in never-never land.

Mommy Life: On Growing Kids the Ezzo Way

I have not read the Ezzos myself, but I have heard too many horror stories and the little bit I have heard even from those that like them really doesn't sound right. This lady's opinion sounds right.

Is Birth Control Playing God?

What is the average American couple’s attitude towards babies? “A boy for me and a girl for you and praise the Lord we are all through.” Where exactly do you find this idea in the Bible?

The fact is that nowhere in the Bible are children born to committed, God-fearing people anything but a blessing from God.

How many Christian couples even pray about how many children God wants them to have? It is clear from scripture that God can and does open and close the womb. It is also clear that God loves humans and the devil hates them. Who would be most likely to want to keep families as small as possible? Who is most likely behind the idea of small families for all? Why don’t we pray about this issue first like we do when deciding where to live, work, vacation or spend our money?

“A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep (You are wasting your time working to build a life if God isn’t in it. Next verse…) “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is His reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.“Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” Psalms 127:1-5

Planning your family without God is foolishness and a waste of time. We aren’t really in control of this issue anyway. No one is guaranteed to have children or more children. Life, ultimately, is created by God, not by the will of mankind. Now, we have to do our part of course. But God is in control. It is not an accident that infertility is at epidemic proportions in this society. God is not necessarily punishing couples by not giving them children but He is punishing our society as a whole for our attitude towards children and Him.

Can you imagine the church having this attitude towards new converts that we have towards children? “We have enough people and don’t need anymore. What can we do to fix it so we don’t grow anymore?” How horrible!

The Bible says children are blessings and debt is a curse, yet we take medicines and have surgeries to avoid the blessings and apply for the curses. Something is not right here.

I wonder how long before this attitude does seep into the church about new converts. “More people would be too expensive (more Sunday school curriculum, bigger building, etc.), it would be too hard to train them, there are enough Christians in the world, etc.”

Yes, I know all the arguments.

“We can’t afford more,

it would be irresponsible,

the world is over populated,

I can’t handle more,

I don’t want to destroy my health, etc.”

Let’s look at them…

“If it is God’s will, it is His bill.” You can afford whatever God wants you to afford. If children are a gift of God and God supplies our needs, God is bound by scripture to provide for those children He gives you.

Now, everyone I have heard say they can’t afford to take a chance of having more children by asking God His opinion on the number of children they should have are living a middle class lifestyle. So their actions say that they really mean “We can’t afford our fancy house, cars, clothes, and vacations if we have more children.” This may very well be true. God doesn’t want us to worship in the predominate religion of America known as Materialism. He just might give you enough children (if you let Him) to bring you down to a level where He becomes the most important thing in your life instead of your importance being in your standard of living and image.

I am not saying everyone should have two-dozen children. I am saying we, the American church, have kicked God out of the bedroom. We don’t want to know what He thinks in this area so we don’t ask Him. We are afraid He will mess up our nice little, ordered world by telling us to do something like bring one more eternal human soul into the world than we planned on. It is almost like we think God is sitting up in heaven waiting for us to say “How many children should we have?” so that He can say “Bwahhhh (evil laughter)! Now I’ve got them. I get to ruin their lives with more babies!”

Does this bring us to “It would be irresponsible”? After all, we all look at the large family in the fast food restaurant and think “welfare mom!” Don’t tell me you never have. (I did. About eight children ago.) Our media and schools are too good at their brain washing for this to not be true. We need to get over what other people think. Easier said than done, I know.

Of course we all know that there are too many people on this planet. I mean, there have been whole books that have figured out that England will have food riots and America will have mass starvation; disease will be rampant everywhere, natural resources will skyrocket in price…oh, wait a minute. Those books were written more than forty years ago and set the date for these events to be in the 1980’s. I am writing this in 2009. I either missed all that or it never happened. In fact, the leading, none catastrophe news items this year has been “Everyone is too fat! We are all dieing of fat induced diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.” Natural resources (when adjusted for political meddling) are cheaper than ever in history. More people all over the planet are living better, healthier, longer lives. There is no evidence for the world being overpopulated. Just opinions.

The idea that the world is over populated stems from the idea that there is no God. If there is a God, and He is all knowing and loves human beings, why would He create a world without all the resources necessary to support all the lives that will be here in the course of history? Claiming we can not trust God to control our wombs in order to keep from running out of resources is a pretty big condemnation of God's wisdom, power, and love.Technology is increasing FASTER than the world’s population. In fact, it may be that all those new minds that have entered the world in the last hundred years are responsible for that increase. More people mean more workers, more division of labor, more prosperity for everyone!

You will find the countries that have the biggest “population problem” are not the most densely populated countries (those would be Monaco, Hong Kong, Singapore, Gibraltar, and Vatican City. Not India, Ethiopia, China, nor any of the others you hear about when this subject is discussed.) The fact is that all the countries listed as having too many babies really have too many politicians! They are socialist and/or religious dictators. The common people in these countries equate babies with more workers and prosperity. The politicians are the ones killing each other off and blowing up food supplies. I say we have as many babies as possible and put limits on the number of politicians we allow to come to being in our countries instead!

“I can’t handle more children.” How do you know that? You may have been over stressed once while baby sitting more children, but baby sitting in no way resembles caring for your own. Many people feel too stressed at two or three children to consider having more, also. I will reveal the best kept secret of large families: It gets easier after the fourth. Yes, that's what I said. It is easier after four.

When my first child was born I had to entertain her, care for all of her physical needs, do all the house work, and cook all the meals. I was alone (at least until my husband got home from work). Stressville. Numbers two and three just added toddlers into the mix.By the time my fourth was born I had other children old enough to really help around the house. I never had to worry about entertaining the little ones. I had time to really enjoy my baby!

This is not saying I make my children slave all day. Yes, there is a lot of work to make this house run, but we have so many people working I have trouble giving them enough to do! (About an hour of chores and a total of an hour of straightening up spread out over the whole day per person working, total, in order to teach a proper work ethic.)

Babies seem to be a curse to us because we make them to be. ANY blessing can be turned into a curse if you try hard enough. We have all heard of people winning the lottery and being broke and declaring bankruptcy within five years. Humans are quite good at this.

11 ways to turn God's blessings into a curse.
1) Get mommy a career so she can resent any time her kids distract her from her "real" job.
2) Deliver your babies in a hospital. Just the atmosphere is so sterile and unnatural that it makes you want to avoid going there at all costs. And with the current c-section rate at 30+%, the very real chance of major abdominal surgury is enough to keep anyone form getting pregnant.
3) Stick your kid in daycare as soon as possible so they can't possibly bond with anyone and learn trust and security much less how to behave or work. Plus, since daycare kids have a much higher rate of ADHD and learning disabilities, this will make them even more of a pain.
4) Send your kids to government school so they can't learn your values or become more attached to you than to their peers.
5) Buy your children every latest do-dad, beginning before they are born. You want to make sure they think they have to have what everyone else does. And the fastest way to make something into a curse is to hit your pocket book.
6) Dress your children in fashionable clothing. Looking like everyone else makes them think like everyone else, encourages rebellion and will cost you thousands of dollars to boot.
7) Set them in front of the TV every waking moment. This warps the brain and molds attitudes into the image of the Hollywood snobs.
8) Never teach them to obey, use manners, or control themselves. Then you won't be able to stand being in the same room.
9) Don't teach them to work so you can be their slave.
10) Make sure you tell everyone you meet what awful kids you have and how awful parenthood is. This will reinforce the sentiment in your brain.
11) Don't love your mate. You must make sure your children have no examples of love to confuse them.

12 ways to turn a curse into a blessing.
1) Mommy determines that caring for her children IS her career, and strives to do the best job possible at it. (Could there possibly be a more important career than raising citizens for the kingdom of God?)
2) Deliver your babies at home (if health permits). Pregnancy is not an illness. The normal atmosphere of the home reduces stress (and exposure to deadly germs!) and makes the whole event more enjoyable and far less dangerous.
3) Keep your children at home with you. This promotes bonding and security in little minds.
4) Teach your children yourself. This gives you the opportunity to teach them your values as well as the added bonus of learning all the neat things you have always wanted to learn and never had the chance before.
 5) Give them very little time with their peers. You want them dependent on their family not other little kids.
6) Provide them with plenty of siblings. Far more entertaining than toys and better for them.
7) Teach them to be discerning of what things are needs, what are wants and what are desires. Supply all their needs, some of their wants and few of their desires.
8) Buy second hand or low cost clothes. Actively teach them not to follow the crowd.
9) Do not let them watch much TV. Teach them to serve others and entertain themselves instead. This actually produces better attitudes and a great deal more entertainment for you as you watch them play.
10) Teach them to obey, use manners, and control themselves. Then everyone will love being in the same room with them.
11) Give them chores to do, gradually teaching them to run a household. This gives them a work ethic they will need in adulthood and relieves your work burden. In addition, it teaches them that they are worthwhile, important members of society. (Studies show that those who do chores as children are happier and richer as adults.)
12) Make sure you tell everyone you meet what wonderful, beautiful, brilliant children you have and how wonderful parenthood is. This will reinforce it in your brain.
13) Love your mate. If you do nothing else, this will make a vast difference in their lives.

I think a major cause of the rise in child abuse in the last couple of decades is that so many of us were raised in two child homes, then squirreled away into classrooms filled with people our own age. We have never really been around small children and have no idea how to treat them or what to expect. Many parents don't know you can expect to tell a two year old to do something and they will do it if you have taught them how.I can see the difference between my oldest daughter and me, already, even though she is not yet a mother.

When they first handed her to me in the hospital, I said "Hey! I'm a mommy…. Now what?" I didn't have a clue what to do with this new little person. Subsequently I made many mistakes due entirely to the fact that I didn't know anything about little kids. My oldest, however, already knows how to hold a baby, play with a toddler, and comfort a preschooler. She knows what to expect from different children of different ages. She is going to be a far better mommy than I ever was.

“I don’t want to destroy my health.” God designed our bodies to have many babies. In fact, science is beginning to prove that the natural break from monthly cycles provided to our bodies by pregnancy and nursing is very healthy (as healthy as working to make a church grow is to the congregation) and a cancer and osteoporosis preventative!

One doctor observed (about fifty years ago when large families were more common) that all of his patients that had large families were strong healthy women. Those with small families were weak and sickly. He didn't know which came first, the strength or the children, but he leaned towards children causing mothers to be stronger. There may now be proof of this.

It seems when a woman is pregnant, the baby leaves some of its cells behind after birth. These cells go to different places in her body and aid healing. Also, every baby you have lowers your risk of cancer by 7%. That is the way God designed us.

Besides, big families are FUN. There is always someone to play with and you are never lonely. I don't know what my hubby and I ever did for entertainment before children. Now we just enjoy sitting around and watching them play:-)

Note: This following chart was written during the time my hubby and I were deciding whether we would have more than two or three children. This is the actual list I made myself to help me decide.

Small Families Can go to Disneyland, out to eat, go on vacation and other places more often.Have newer clothes and more toys.Have one room per child.Provide solitude. Can more easily afford college

Big Families Always have someone who wants to "play with me." Learn to share, cooperate, get along and work with a team.Teach older children how to care for those younger and weaker than themselves. Younger children usually have nieces and nephews just the right age to learn on.Are never lonely. Can more easily influence society.

We now have eight. A large family provides for my children companionship, servitude in the New Testament model, teamwork, and socialization (the right kind because I know what their playmates (siblings) have been taught).

A small family provides things and events.

"Having five children in six years is the besttraining in the world for Speaker of the House."Nancy Pelosi

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalms 127:3-5

Let’s run some math; if the average Christian family has two children just like the sinners, then in an imaginary neighborhood with ten families, nine unsaved and one Christian, we would end up with eighteen sinners and two Christians in the next generation. If they each found someone just like themselves to marry and had two children, by the third generations we would have thirty-six sinners and four Christians- still a nine to one ratio. Now, if the Christian family decides to let God control their family size and they have the historically normal seven children who find mates of like belief and have seven children each, by the third generation we have forty-nine new Christian adults to thirty-six sinners. Research says that it takes thrity-four Christians to win one sinner to God; so in the first neighborhood we have yet to have enough Christians to win one sinner while in the second we have one convert. By the fourth generation we would have 343 christians (not counting our convert) to seventy-two sinners; a ratio of 4.8 christians per sinner, or enough Christians to lead at least ten sinners to God. the numbers just get bigger as you go along.
